Housing

Guinea pigs need warmth so should either be kept in a hutch inside an outhouse or garage (not used for cars as the fumes may kill!) or in an indoor cage.

The minimum size of hutch/cage recommended for two guinea pigs is 120cmx60cm. Guinea pigs do not jump or stretch onto their hindlimbs like rabbits so height of the cage is less important.

There should be a separate enclosed sleeping area for the guinea pigs to escape into.

A couple of suitable cages and hutches are pictured below:

Exercise area

In nice weather, guinea pigs should be allowed access to the garden if possible. They are very good lawnmowers! Move the run around regularly to give them fresh grass. In cold, wet weather, the guinea pigs should be given an area indoors to stretch their muscles. This could be provided by a puppy play pen or even a wooden run indoors.

Provide shelter of some sort in the outside run so that the guinea pigs can shelter from potential predators or unexpected bad weather.

Bedding

To line the cage or hutch, you can choose wood shavings or straw. Both of these are renowed as being messy and get everywhere, so be prepared for cleaning the surrounding area! Do not use sawdust as this can irritate eyes.

Hay should be placed in a hay rack to prevent it being soiled. Hay should be available at all times.

Accessories

Food bowls should be sturdy to prevent the guinea pigs tipping it over and to avoid damage by chewing. For information about what to feed your guinea pig, click here.

A water bottle is the best way of providing liquid as it keeps the water clean and prevents spillages. Be aware that the water may freeze in winter.

There are several suitable toys for guinea pigs which are available at pet shops. All toys should be sturdy and indestructible.

Grooming Equipment

Long-haired guinea pigs need regular grooming. You should get a slicker brush and a comb. Most guinea pigs will need their claws trimming from time to time so nail clippers are a good idea. Ask your vet to show you how to clip them.
